Rob Benwell’s Blogging to the Bank is in its third release, and this release fixes many of the shortcomings of the earlier books: namely, they were outdated soon after they hit the virtual shelves.

The book begins with a fairly in depth look at Rob’s research process, and how he chooses blogs and keywords to target. He then moves on to show you how he creates content for blogs, either by using private label content, outsourcing, free articles, or other similar methods.

It’s important to note that Rob’s methods work for niche blogs. For bloggers who are looking to build long-term blogs with brands, the Blogging to the Bank approach is not a good fit. The Blogging to the Bank approach is a better fit for someone who is looking to quickly launch a blog in a niche, set it up for monetization, and then move on to the next blog.

This version of Blogging to the Bank moves away from contextual advertising revenue (e.g. programs like AdSense) and into affiliate marketing for monetization, an approach that I agree with wholeheartedly.

The book also reveals some methods for attracting traffic, but unfortunately, there are a fair number of inaccuracies in this section that are more likely to get you in trouble with the search engines than bring you traffic. For example, Rob encourages the use of sponsored or paid reviews, which Google has not only said are against its webmaster guidelines, but they have started to actively crack down on this type of monetization. So do additional research before implementing any techniques of that nature.

The package includes a wealth of bonuses, but they have little value. The software is out of date by at least 2 years, and the niche blogs are of low-quality. They can still be used, however, provided that you rewrite the content to make it your own.

In short, Blogging to the Bank is an excellent niche blogging beginner’s guide, but it’s doubtful that the techniques will make you the next millionaire blogger. This is truly a case where the program is popular because people promote it, not because it’s a great purchase.

What sets this book apart from many others is that rather than presenting an abstract objective, the authors show you exactly what works best, going so far as to describe in detail exactly how your contextual and affiliate ads should be styled and formatted.

Some readers might go into information overload while reading through the material, as it has a no-fluff style even though it’s a full 260 pages long. The authors distill the latest blogging advice into step-by-step advice for readers to follow. Sometimes the detail can seem overwhelming, so you’re encouraged to take this program one step at a time.

Blogging for Riches has undergone many changes since its introduction in 2007. In its current form, the primary offering consists of a video series that focuses on niche blogging. This aspect is important to understand as the programs reviewed on this site can be broken down into two general categories: long-term blogging methods (methods for building flagship blogs) and niche blogging methods. Blogging for Riches falls into the latter category.

The consensus is that the best part of this program is the research-oriented videos related to finding and targeting a niche. The course opens with these niche identification videos before moving into the implementation-related steps.

There are a large number of videos on the typical offerings: basic startup tasks, blog installation, blog configuration, etc. Blogging for Riches then moves onto content creation, reviewing the usual suspects of insourcing, outsourcing, private label rights, and article directories. John Yeo would be considered by most to be a newcomer to the blogging field, but he brings a fresh approach to teaching blogging concepts and tasks that makes his content compelling.

What’s interesting about John’s approach is that he rarely gets bogged down in the details. While the content is detailed in areas, for many subjects he explains the concepts, and then shows you free tools you can use on the web to carry out tasks associated with those concepts.

The book contains a good section on discovering your niche, which is an area that doesn’t receive as much attention in other books as it should. While the author’s flagship blog (a wedding blog) was a labor of love, the author is quick to point out that your niche must have a market in order to be profitable. This breaks the usual dogma of “do what you love,” an approach I agree with in full.

The book also covers how to create a blog, apply themes, customize your blog, and options for filling it with content. John takes a more agnostic approach than other books, showing you how to perform these tasks with both Wordpress and Blogger.

Blogging newcomers will find the “show me” approach to be very helpful, as John includes annotated screenshots showing you how to not only create your blog, but also how to promote it, use web 2.0, and monetize it.

Product Review

Atomic Blogging contains some good information for blogging newcomers, as the first half of the book is devoted to things such as domain registration, blog installation and configuration, etc.

After the first half of the book, Alvin walks the reader through some basics on search engine optimization, tips on blogging, writing content, getting traffic to your blog, and monetizing your blog. While much of the information is valuable, there are many “holes” in the book, leaving the majority of the sections entirely too incomplete to be of serious value for the reader.

For example, in the short discussion on search engine optimization, Alvin focuses exclusively on a small number of on-page SEO practices only, and completely ignores many of the most effective SEO techniques that even newcomers should know.

The “bonus” chapters are similar. While there are some useful nuggets of information, they are incomplete in nature.

Many of the bonuses included in the package add little value, as well. For example, to access the decidedly average Barking Video series bonus, you must first sign up for another internet marketers mailing list, a practice with which I don’t agree.

Another problem that many readers will notice is that English is not Alvin’s first language. While that in itself is not a problem, what is a problem is that it’s often difficult to understand exactly what it is that Alvin is trying to explain.

Atomic Blogging has been devalued somewhat recently, as the author has begun including it as a free bonus to other products. While it’s his product, and he can do what he pleases with it, it does devalue the purchases made by his past customers, which is probably not the best long-term approach.

Although the content of the book lacks the value that is described on the sales page, Alvin is a nice, helpful guy.

Meets Stated Objectives?

This is a useful package for a complete blogging newcomer, but there are far too many subjects that aren’t covered fully enough to meet the stated objectives.

Ease of Use

The book includes many clear, step-by-step instructions for working in your blog. However, some of the content is difficult to understand due to a language barrier.

Customer Support

Support is very good, and questions are likely to be met with a timely response.

Value for Money

The bonuses add little value to the book, making its current price slightly higher than one would expect for the value received.

Overall Rating

Atomic Blogging contains enough information to get the complete beginner started with a new blog, but there are many holes in knowledge that will need filled or supplemented through other sources.

Blogging Platform

Next they usualy ask me what blogging platform to use and where to host their blog. I always recommend people use Wordpress as their blogging platform. No other blogging script or service has as much support or free plugins.

Hosting

As far as hosting I’ve used many hosts and can recommend several. The higgest recommendation probably goes to Hostgator because they are cheap, have good support and allow you to host multiple sites. Another great feature is that they have a one click Wordpress install (which is great for people who are not technical and don’t know how to install Wordpress).

Promotion Tools

So after you learn Rob’s system, have gotten set up with hosting, and have created yourself a blog or two, then I recommend you invest in the following 2 tools to help you automate the promotion of your blog(s).

The first is called Bookmarking Demom and it is a truly amazing piece of software that gets you get unlimited, one-way, high PR links on autopilot. Instead of going over the features here, simply visit the site and watch the videos of the software in action.
